Bad News

It has recently been announced by the ferry company Naviera Armas that the ferry service between Los Cristianos in Tenerife and Valle Gran Rey in La Gomera has now been suspended indefinitely. The direct service between the two ports by high speed catamaran was introduced two years ago, but since this summer only sailed at weekends. The company has also stated that it will study the viability of a similar ferry service to be reinstated in the future, possibly with a smaller vessel.
This is sad news for Valle Gran Rey and bad news for the forest in the national park which is experiencing higher volumes of traffic since the ferry stopped operating as all goods and traffic have to go across the mountain through the park on that road now.

This is sad news 😕
But does Naviera offer this service?

Indeed sad news. Is there any point in trying to lobby to get a service re-established? I think any tourist who used the service (as we did) would support it. Taking a taxi from SS is both expensive and not so pleasant unless the driver crawls along. And more dangerous for everyone, especially those trying to enjoy the National Park.

Armas is a private shipping company and the local politicians (inluding La Gomera's president) are doing the lobbying on our behalf, so I don't think any petitions will add much weight to Armas' ''viability studies'', and the ferry services are alredy heavily subsidised for Canary Islands resident passengers.
I wouldn't give up hope yet, though. But it will take time, at least until 'mañana'....
